What Size Should I Print? | Maryland Senior Photographer

Have you ever thought about what size to print your images? Like really thought about it - beyond printing to fit a frame you own? Odds are, probably not. Most of us haven’t. But it can make a really big difference.

Most smartphone cameras shoot at a 4:3 ratio, whereas most 35mm camera shoot 3:2. What the heck does that even mean? Well, it means your smartphone shoots 4 units wide x 3 units high. Or a professional shoot, 3 units wide x 2 units high. The ratio is determined by the size of the sensor on the camera you use - which is probably getting way too technical for you. Just keep in mind - that whatever you print, you will probably need to do some cropping - which can lead to a lot of frustration when you purchase a digital collection and print on your own if you’re not prepared.

Whenever I get a print order, I educate my clients on aspect ratios - because it is impossible to get the exact same image in a 4x6 as in an 8x10. Why? Well, if my aspect ratio is 3:2, that means the full image will print on 4x6, 8x12, and so on. So if you want an 8x10 - you need to cut some of the image off.

Want to get the full image? Stick with the 3:2 ratio: 4x6, 8x12, 16x24, 32x48 - all available when you purchase prints and wall art during your ordering session.

Uncropped image at a 3:2 ratio. The entire image would print on a 4x6” print.

As a 5x7, the image still shows most of the shot - but to get the 5 units by 7 units, we actually had to cut some off of the top and sides.

8x10 - what some consider wall art, but really, it’s way too small for the wall. But compare this image to the one above. You lost a lot on the sides. To get a print comparable to the 4x6 but larger, like an 8x10, you would need an 8x12 print.

11x14, entry size wall art. The 11x14 is almost exactly the same as the 5x7 - but perfect for the wall.

9 Tips for a Killer Boudoir Session

“I’ve always wanted to do this for myself. Is that weird?”

I hear that phrase just about every day. Who doesn’t want to feel sexy, powerful and desired??? It doesn’t make you selfish and arrogant - it makes you human. Boudoir sessions can be the most empowering experience of your life! Here are a few tips to make sure it’s perfect.

sexy professional pics.jpg

1. Don’t fake tan

I know you want to look dark and tan - but best case scenario, you’ll look orange, and worst case, you could streak too. Be careful in the sun too - sunburn is never sexy. Embrace your natural skin tones!

2. Get your hair cut and color touched up - but not too close to your session.

Fresh cuts and color always make you feel great and usually look their best a few days after. Don’t risk a bad cut before your big day - give it a few days to settle in.

3. Drink lots of water the week before!

Let’s face it - we all are probably slightly dehydrated. Drinking water can boost your mood, improve your sleep, reduce dryness, and give your skin an extra glow. Come to think of it, maybe we should just drink extra water period?

4. Touch up your brows - just not day of!

If you wax or pluck your brows - give yourself a break of 24-48 hours from your last hair removal session before your boudoir session so any swelling and redness is gone.

5. DON’T TOUCH THAT PIMPLE

See reason #4 - the redness and swelling just aren’t worth it! Plus it’s super easy to remove them in Photoshop.

6. Pick lingerie you feel good in - and when in doubt, size UP

NO ONE wants to pick the bigger size. Trust me, as someone who has yo-yo dieted their entire life, my self worth has been intimately tied to the number on my waistband more times than I care to admit. But the reality is - the only person who will know is you. And no one wants a muffin top.

7. Clean the bottoms of your shoes!

I’ll never forget one of the first times I took my boys for pictures with the “good” photographer (read: expensive). They were 1 and 3. I was stressed. We were late. They were fussing. And somewhere in our 15 minute session, they calmed down and snuggled on the couch for a cute embraced shot. I fell in love when I saw it a few weeks later, only to glance down and see a half removed, gum covered Batman sticker on the bottom of my oldest’s shoes. Truth is - while your shoes may not have Batman stickers and gum on them, if they’ve ever seen the light of day, they could benefit from a Clorox wipe.

8. Opt for Professional Hair and Makeup

Every photographer handles professional hair and makeup a little differently in their session. I strongly encourage it, but don’t require it because everyone is different. A professional stylist will give you an extra hour of pampering before your session so you can just relax and take in the experience. They can pull off sexy j-f hair (you know what I mean) with a blink of an eye and transform you from your everyday look into a glamazon goddess.

9. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi!

You are having intimate portraits done - so while your brain might be thinking about your boobs and butt, don’t forget your fingers and toes will show up a lot as well. Treat yourself to a professional manicure and pedicure. If you’re feeling flashy, pick your color to complement your selected lingerie. Not sure? A French manicure or a dark color like Chanel Vamp (now called Rouge Noir) are always gorgeous.

Limited Edition Santa Mini Sessions | Baltimore Child Photographer

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be here, brainstorming ways to host my Santa sessions in the midst of a pandemic and keep everyone safe.

I’m not sure what my Santa sessions will look like this year. I am evaluating outdoor and other covered/ open aired options that will provide for minimal contact, social distancing, and hard surfaced that can be wiped down between each child visiting with Santa. But I can promise this - they will be magical.

One of my favorite childhood memories is Santa. I would count down the days until his arrival. By Christmas Eve, I was shaking with excitement. I remember driving home with my parents after Christmas Eve mass. Our house was right by a water tower (on an airport landing path), and that water tower had a giant red light on top. Now I realize it was to avoid a deadly airplane crash - but then, then it was ABSOLUTELY Rudolph. Santa was in MY neighborhood and I needed to get to bed immediately so he would come to my house, too.

I reflect on that joy and excitement every year when I develop my Santa mini sessions for the year. Each session is designed to bring the magic of Santa to every child - on their own terms. I promise no lines, no tears (well, maybe happy ones), and a simply magical, memorable experience.

Once I know what this year’s sessions will look like, I will open the sessions up to anyone on my waitlist first - with specialty pricing! Get on the list to get first dibs.

P.S. My sessions are Autism friendly. Many of the kids featured below are on the spectrum.

DAMMIT I AM AT THE BEACH THAT WEEKEND! ARE YOU DOING THIS AGAIN?

Kind of. I offer my marathon once per year but given the circumstances of the world - I am offering up to 2 additional sessions this summer that may be shot at your home. If you are interested in this option, contact me to discuss.

Jenna | C Milton Wright Class of 2020

No one planned for a pandemic or global quarantine - especially not the Class of 2020. The second quarantine was lifted, I was so excited to hang out with Jenna and her parents at the Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air, Maryland for some cap and gown portraits. Nothing will quite make up for experience of sitting through a long, drawn out commencement …. but I’m hopeful these portraits will create an equally memorable capstone for all of her hard work.

Thinking about a Cap and Gown session? Email me at janemackphoto@gmail.com. Sessions start at $99 - with special pricing for multiple grads.

Mason Family Portrait Session | Baltimore Family Photographer

Jeneen contacted me last October to book her family photography session. I started my consultation as I always do - do you have any locations in mind? Any particular style? And that’s when Jeneen told me her family had never been professionally photographed - and her last portraits were taken at her wedding. (And let me say - I’ve seen her wedding portraits and they are ah-mazing).

I was so excited that Jeneen picked me to be the first to document her entire family. Jeneen selected my mini sessions at Jerusalem Mill in Kingsville, Maryland as the perfect location and time. And she was right. It was a little overcast that day - which most don’t realize, makes for amazing outdoor portrait lighting. The Fall colors just POPPED. Jeneen dressed her family in tones of mustard, navy and burgundy - and it all came together like magic.
