Have you ever thought about what size to print your images? Like really thought about it - beyond printing to fit a frame you own? Odds are, probably not. Most of us haven’t. But it can make a really big difference.
Most smartphone cameras shoot at a 4:3 ratio, whereas most 35mm camera shoot 3:2. What the heck does that even mean? Well, it means your smartphone shoots 4 units wide x 3 units high. Or a professional shoot, 3 units wide x 2 units high. The ratio is determined by the size of the sensor on the camera you use - which is probably getting way too technical for you. Just keep in mind - that whatever you print, you will probably need to do some cropping - which can lead to a lot of frustration when you purchase a digital collection and print on your own if you’re not prepared.
Whenever I get a print order, I educate my clients on aspect ratios - because it is impossible to get the exact same image in a 4x6 as in an 8x10. Why? Well, if my aspect ratio is 3:2, that means the full image will print on 4x6, 8x12, and so on. So if you want an 8x10 - you need to cut some of the image off.
Want to get the full image? Stick with the 3:2 ratio: 4x6, 8x12, 16x24, 32x48 - all available when you purchase prints and wall art during your ordering session.
